I think you are missing something.
Not only the word “passes” which is a lot easier than “laterals” (oh dear…).
What you have witnessed here is the excitement seen in games of Rugby. For a few fleeting moments the utter interrupted drudgery of Gridiron was relieved by… continuous sporting action.
Reminded me of when I used to go watch my daughter play bumblebee soccer.
