I’m weird. My favorite part of this video is the soundtrack that was obviously composed for drive-in movie intermission music. Of course the drag racing is lots of fun, too. Drag racing is really silly. You build this really elaborate machine to go in a straight line for a quarter mile. That’s a long run for a short slide, as they say. But so what?
Go on, Say it. Andy Granatelli. I can’t hear you. ANDY GRANATELLI! It’s fun to say Andy Granatelli. I have never figured out exactly who Andy Granatelli was, or is, but I still walk around yelling ANDY GRANATELLI every chance I get.
The TT Isle of Man motorcycle race is now a “A THING.” It’s interesting to consider how a thing becomes “A THING.” The Kentucky Derby was once a horse race. Now it’s an event that transcends the reason it exists. The Super Bowl is only vaguely about football. Then again, the NFL doesn’t have much to do with football the rest of the season, either.
So it’s 1968, and a bunch of guys dressed like Emma Peel push their bikes across the starting line and go bombing around the Isle of Man. It looks like a blast. There’s not a lot of separation between the riders and the crews and the onlookers. It’s a picnic with race in the middle of it. Now it’s an international happening. How’d that happen?
Maybe it’s just me, but auto racing doesn’t seem to have the pizzazz it used to have. Even this Ferrari F 187 is too “new” for my tastes. I much prefer watching the old footage of colorful men driving black and white cars. Now the men are colorless.
